The Asia-Pacific Writers and Translators Association (AP Writers) 2014 Conference

July 17, 2014 - July 20, 2014

The Asia-Pacific Writers and Translators Association (AP Writers) meets in Singapore this week at a time of debate among many writers in the city nation about a controversial decision by the National Library Board (NLB) to withdraw and, reportedly, to pulp three children’s books assessed not to uphold family values.

Some of the local authors taking part include Felix Cheong, Ovidia Yu, Alfian bin Sa’at, Suchen Christine Lim, Marc Nair and Joshua Ip. Some of these authors have withdrawn their support from other recent events associated with the NLB. The AP Writers’ event is not associated with the NLB.

Among the international authors who will be speaking are Nury Vittachi (Chair of AP Writers), Jose Dalisay (member of the AP Writers’ Board), Agnes Lam, Qaisra Shahraz, Linda Jaivin, Merlinda Bobis, Mani Rao, Tony Birch, Francesca Rendle-Short, Jessie Cole, Lisa Walker and many others.

The meeting takes place from Thursday 17 July and concludes on Sunday 20 July. On the request of The Arts House, Sunday is a free public afternoon. To attend the conference on other days Singapore residents are asked to pay $20.

This international meeting is much more than just a three-day gab fest. Fourteen authors will launch new books over three sessions, all open free to the public. The first session, on Thursday 17th July at 4 pm in the Earshot Café at the Arts House, will see the launch of an anthology of women’s writing from India edited by Menka Shivdasani, featuring a special performance of one of her poems by renowned Kuchipudi dancer Shantha Ratii. Also launching work in that session are Indonesian author Okky Madasari, Malaysian poet Eu Yoke Lin, Lontar publisher John McGlynn, Victor Marsh – whose memoir, The Boy in the Yellow Dress, draws on his experiences as a disoriented young man who is initiated by a guru and discovers what lies within.1
