Annie McCann’s journey into writing began with a love for books and community, leading her to found Read3r’z Re-Vu, a network of readers and creators in Sydney. Her passion for fantasy rooted in cultural folklore inspired her to write stories that reflect her Indonesian heritage—something she found lacking in mainstream literature. Her short story Twisted Elegance of the Deep Green Sea, featured in the horror anthology This Fresh Hell by Clan Destine Press, marked a major milestone not just as a debut publication, but as a celebration of her West Javanese roots. The story, which reimagines the legend of Nyai Roro Kidul, was born from a desire to bring culturally rich horror narratives into contemporary settings. This achievement reaffirmed her path and gave her the confidence to keep writing and expanding her voice.
Mentorship programs have played a pivotal role in McCann’s growth, particularly the Writers NSW Emerging Writers from Diverse Backgrounds Program. With guidance from acclaimed editor and author Eugen Bacon, Annie crafted a new story inspired by the legend of Gunung Tampomas, blending modern storytelling with traditional lore. These experiences, combined with her deep appreciation for culturally inspired YA and middle grade fiction, continue to shape her writing. As she works on new projects—some of which are now in development with US publisher Fictional Frontiers—McCann remains committed to amplifying Indonesian mythologies and diverse narratives. Her advice to emerging writers is simple but powerful: be true to your voice, write the story you want told, and never underestimate the impact of a well-timed mentorship.
