One of the trios who established Pudjangga Baru in 1933, ARMIJN PANE is probably best known for his novel Belenggu (Shackled) which appeared in 1940. Born in Tapanuli #onthisday in 1908, he was educated in Solo, Jakarta, and Surabaya and worked for a number of years prior to the war with Balai Pustaka. He is the author of numerous plays and short stories and during the Japanese occupation headed the Literature section of Pusat Kebudayaan in Jakarta. He was also the editor of the literary annual Kebudayaan Timur.
