Hans Bague Jassin, better known as H.B. JASSIN, was born #onthisday in 1917. He was a literary critic, documentarian, and professor. In 1933, Jassin pioneered diligently collecting, among others: diaries, his writings in mass media, letters and personal photographs. Later in the Dutch and Japanese colonial period his interest increased and documented magazines or newspapers published. His penchant for documenting has been increasingly persistent since H.B. Jassin worked at Balai Pustaka (circa 1940s) as a book reviewer, regularly collecting literary works, either in the form of typed manuscripts or handwriting of authors and literary books. During his life Jassin was highly recognized for his work, acquiring the nickname “The Pope of Indonesian Literature” and receiving numerous awards, including Ramon Magsaysay award in 1987 for “his preserving for Indonesians their literary heritage.”
