In 2009, one of Indonesia’s most important fighters for freedom, a publisher, translator, and left-wing intellectual, JOESOEF ISAK, died at the age of 81. He is most known as the man who, together with the late Hasyim Rachman, defied the dictator Suharto and published the works of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, which were banned under the New Order’s decrees.
