In 1950, a group of leftist writers and artists in Jakarta formed an organization under the title of Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat (Institute for People’s Culture) or Lekra, as it is generally called, with branches in Medan, Surabaya, Bandung, and Yogyakarta. After the failed 30 September Movement coup, popularly believed to have been promoted by the Communist Party, and the mass killings that followed, Sukarno’s replacement Suharto and his New Order government banned Lekra together with the other communist-associated organizations.
