On this day in 2008, Komunitas Salihara was officially opened as an arts center in southern Jakarta. It’s the first privately-funded multidisciplinary arts center in Indonesia. It was established by a number of writers, artists, journalists, and art lovers, as a new incarnation of Komunitas Utan Kayu; a small arts collective which was started in 1996 and was active both as an arts enclave and a centre for resistance during the last years of the New Order era..

As of now, our resource library consists of approximately 600 writers, 831 books by 257 publishers, 772 contributing authors, 1149 (386 coverages, 226 clippings, and 537 reviews) articles published in 361 media outlets, 81 works in translation, and 58 useful resources that we consider particularly worth noting.

For short, our main feature, the writer's directory, provides a way for writers to find one another, but more importantly, the resources provided make it easy for event hosts—especially for international event hosts—literary organizers, arts administrators, librarians, booksellers, and readers to get in touch with writers. It's a HOME FOR INDONESIAN WRITERS. We strive to break down the language barriers that have prevented Indonesian books or literature from becoming more widespread.
