Queer Menafsir is written from the experiences, reflections, and theological contemplations of a queer Muslim who seeks to offer an inclusive interpretation of the interconnected concepts of embodiment, divinity, and Islamic faith. This book introduces the idea of queer theology, which envisions a religious understanding where all humans—regardless of gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation—have the same potential to approach the Divine and the same space to “speak” about the Divine.
The assumptions that gender and sexual diversity are “Western products,” and that religion inherently rejects such diversity, are two major myths that this book aims to challenge. By using the lived realities of queer communities as an authoritative source of theological experience, this book reconstructs religious and divine interpretation as a foundation for justice and acceptance toward identities that have long been suspected and marginalized in the name of religion and God.
