The author behind Netflix’s Cigarette Girl explores the universal struggle for power through the world of ants
PENGUIN Random House Southeast Asia today announces the publication of Colony by award-winning Indonesian author Ratih Kumala, whose acclaimed novel Gadis Kretek (Cigarette Girl) was adapted into the hit Netflix series Cigarette Girl. The series won Best Miniseries at the Seoul International Drama Awards 2024, while the novel has been translated into several languages.
Colony marks Kumala’s return with an ambitious and unexpected literary fable — one that moves from the world of Indonesian cigarettes and family histories to the subterranean world of ants, using their rigid social hierarchy to examine the universal human hunger for power.
