“On the evening Margio killed Anwar Sadat, Kyai Jahro was blissfully busy with his fishpond.” (pg 1). The opening sentence is presented by Eka Kurniawan in his novel Lelaki Harimau (Gramedia, 2004; 192 pages). Eka in this case ‘breaks’ the norm of mystery novels in general; he does not show small discoveries that lead to the big reveal of the mystery of who killed Anwar Sadat. The opening sentence of Man Tiger is the resolution of the murder mystery.
Eka Kurniawan then shows his strength in crafting an interesting story from a short premise. As in his previous novels, Beauty is A Wound (2002) and Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash (2014), Eka shows his skill in playing with every word and sentence that expands what was previously a simple murder story into a tragic story of a family that explains why Margio committed the murder.
