Jesse Q. Sutanto is no stranger to blending genres: From murder mystery romantic comedy “Dial A for Aunties” to the cozy and humorous “Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers,” Sutanto skillfully crafts fun and charismatic stories that leave you both in suspense and with a good laugh. She sprinkles in additional charm to shine light on the Chinese-Indonesian community, highlighting elements like traditional snacks, meddling aunties and their family-oriented culture.
Though her most recent novel, “Next Time Will Be Our Turn,” is told with less dramatic flair compared to her previous works — no fancy weddings or dead bodies this time — it differentiates itself as perhaps one of her most tender publications. Without the distractions of a wild plot, this book takes its time to build relationships, create meaningful dialogue and express heartfelt emotions. Though the cover of the book may suggest a light, playful beach read, “Next Time Will Be Our Turn” stretches across decades and oceans, resulting in a story about staying true and honest to yourself in the face of staunch opposition.
