Arifin C. (Chairin) Noer studied in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Cokroaminoto University in Yogyakarta. In 1972–1973 he participated in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in the United States. He was also known as a poet and as a theater and film director, and he won the Citra Award for best film and best screenplay several times. His collections of poetry include Nurul Aini (1963), Siti Aisah (1964), Puisi-puisi yang Kehilangan Puisi (1967), Selamat Pagi, Jajang (1979) and Nyanyian Sepi (1995).
