Naomi Srikandi

Naomi Srikandi has been a resident artist of Teater Garasi since 1994, when she studied Communications at the Faculty of Social and Political Science of Gadjah Mada University. She has toured to European and Asian cities as collaborating actor in Teater Garasi’s and several other international productions and festivals. Her early fictions were short-listed in “20 Best Indonesian Short Stories” and published by Pena Kencana Literary Awards and Gramedia Pustaka Utama (2008 and 2009).

Her directorial works mostly concern about sexuality and its intricate relationship with every day life politics, religion and violence. Using aesthetics as a framework for investigating the question how performances retroact to politics, Naomi received Kelola Foundation’s EWA grants in 2010 and 2011 for her performance projects “Medea Media” and “Goyang Penasaran”. Her “Medea Media” text-for-performance was short-listed in the Women Playwrights International Conference and was presented in Södra Teatern, Stockholm (2012). Naomi was in artist-in-residencies hosted by Nottle Theatre Company-Hooyong Performing Arts Centre, Wonju (2011) and DasArts Master School of Theatre, Amsterdam (2012).1

Naomi also writes fictions, two of her short stories were selected by the jury of Pena Kencana Literary Awards and were published in books titled 20 Cerpen Indonesia Terbaik 2008 dan 20 Cerpen Indonesia Terbaik 2009 by Pena Kencana and Gramedia Pustaka Utama, in 2009 and 2010. She is one of the members of Indonesian Playwrights Forum (Forum Penulis Naskah Lakon) and her play Perbuatan Serong (2009) has been published by FPNL, Omah Sore and Teater Garasi in 2011. Her adaptations include Shakuntala (2007) and Medea Media (2010) and Goyang Penasaran (2011). She is too, a teacher/speaker and facilitator working on trainings and workshops with applied theater basic. Naomi co-created and hosts Kosmo, a twice a month TV talk show produced by TVRI Jogja, discussing about contemporary arts, public space and intercultural issues. Now she temporary lives in Wonju, South Korea as an artist-in-residence, hosted by Nottle Theatre Company-Hooyong Performing Arts Center.2
