Rio Johan was born in Baturaja, South Sumatra in 1990. His first book, a short story collection, Aksara Amananunna (The Alphabets of Amananunna; Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia, 2014), received Tempo Magazine’s award for Best Prose Fiction in 2014, while his first novel, Ibu Susu (Mother’s Milk; Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia, 2017), received the Kusala Sastra Khatulistiwa for Best First/Second Book in 2018. His other works include Buanglah Hajat pada Tempatnya (Dump Your Business in the Right Place; Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia, 2020), Rekayasa Buah (Genetically Modified Fruit; Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2021), Karavansara (Caravansary; Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2022), and Orang Keren Tidak Menengok ke Arah Ledakan (Cool Guys Don’t Look at Explosions; Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2023).
He is also a translator of French literature into Indonesian and currently lives in Paris.1
