Chiara Formichi is a scholar of Asia whose primary research interests lie in the intersections of religion and politics. Her methodological approach combines archival research and ethnography to explore questions of modernity in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Her work has examined themes such as Islamic statehood (Brill, 2012), religious pluralism (Routledge, 2014; Cornell University Press, 2021), and Muslim minorities (Oxford University Press, 2015) in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. She has also contributed to discussions on the disciplinary intersections of Islamic Studies, History, and Area Studies (Cambridge University Press, 2021; Routledge, 2021), as well as on gendered care work in Indonesia (Stanford University Press, 2025). Her current research extends the concept of gendered care work into the realms of ritual practice and environmental conservation.
Formichi teaches courses on various aspects of religion and society in Asia and is interested in supervising honors theses and graduate research that explore the intersections of religion, politics, gender, and environmental change across spatial or temporal contexts.
