Well-known for writing about the oppression of women in the Balinese context, Balinese author Oka Rusmini is now studying ancient literary texts from across Indonesia. Over the course of 20 years, the 49-year-old writer, who also works as a journalist for the local Bali Post newspaper, has released around 10 books. In all her writings, the violence against women and the oppression they have to face due to Balinese adat (customs) as well as the shackles put on human beings through the caste system have become a constant common thread.
