Vannessa Hearman

Writer / See Roots

Vannessa Hearman is a historian whose research focuses on the 1965–66 mass violence in Indonesia and its enduring legacies. In recent years, she has expanded her scholarly work to include Timor-Leste studies, with a particular interest in the relationship between Indonesia and Timor-Leste, as well as Australia’s role in supporting the development of this bilateral connection.

With a background in Indonesian language, history, and politics, Vannessa brings an interdisciplinary approach to her teaching and research. Although trained as a historian, she actively collaborates with scholars from diverse fields such as anthropology, art history, and cinema studies. Since 2021, she has served as Senior Lecturer in History at Curtin University in Perth.1
