Through his book Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood (2016), Trevor Noah made me understand what racism actually means. Racism is not merely mockery about the colour of someone's skin. Racism is a system in which a group of human beings is not counted as human because of the identity they were born into. They are regarded as only slightly more useful than animals.
The book is his own memoir; Noah being one of the best-known comedians in Hollywood today, and four-time host of the Academy Awards. I had not expected to rate it among the finest memoirs I have read, in content and in craft alike. It is very rare for me not to want to miss a single word of a book; usually, once I can see where a story is going, I skip ahead to the next sentence. This time was different. I was able to savour every word of this English-language book. I suffered while it was unfinished; I looked forward to any spare hour in which I could read it undisturbed.
