An ethnographic novel. The novel starts with the personal affairs and a personal conflict leading to a bigger conflict between two groups of people. The issues about Mentawai customs on marriage, living along with their battle with modernism are scattered throughout the book. The purpose of the portrayal is to highlight the pride and dignity of being a part of the Mentawai tribe. Mind you that the wooden bird is the symbol of the pride that a Mentawai family leaves hanging in their house.¹
