The presence of this historical novel is not only intended to fill an episode in our nationhood—one situated at a complicated and decisive point of rebirth—but also to address a literary gap, as very few works explore this turbulent period. For that reason, this novel offers us an alternative reading, allowing us to view the paths and waves of history differently and from a new angle.
This tetralogy is divided into four books. This division can also be understood as a segmentation of the movement as it unfolded across different periods. And this third novel, Jejak Langkah, marks the phase of organizing the resistance.
Minke mobilizes all available forces to challenge the entrenched power of the Dutch East Indies, a regime centuries old. Yet Minke does not choose armed resistance. He chooses the path of journalism, producing as many publications for the Pribumi as possible. The most notable, of course, is Medan Prijaji.
Through this newspaper, Minke urges the Pribumi to do three things: strengthen boycotts, organize themselves, and abolish feudal culture. And through this journalistic effort, Minke also proclaims: “Educate the people through organization and educate the rulers through resistance.”
