Our future is built on the questions of the past. Although the late Budi Darma’s novel, Olenka, was published in Indonesia in 1983, it is only being released in English in the United States in 2026. This is remarkable since the novel’s characters are white, Midwestern Americans.
Darma passed away in 2021, but left an enduring and unique footprint as an iconoclastic, multi-genre voice in Indonesian literature. He pursued graduate studies at Indiana University before returning to his native Java to serve as faculty and rector at Surabaya State University, simultaneously publishing short-stories, essays, and novels. Olenka, one of his best-known novels, draws on his experience living in Indiana to critique American culture and question universal human constructs like marriage, and family, and religion.
