Koko Hendri Lubis, Digging Up Literary Treasures from Medan Comics and Romances

What Media Says

From years of literary treasure-hunting, Koko wrote a number of important books. He brought to light Medan's romances and comics and their forgotten writers.

Novels and comics from Medan flourished during the 1930s to the 1960s, then faded into obscurity. Koko Hendri Lubis (47) has been uncovering the long history of these two literary genres from the remnants that remain. He searches for and collects comics and novels, gathers misprinted pages, meets the families of authors, and even travels to libraries in the Netherlands to find the remaining collections.

From years of delving into the treasure trove of literature, Koko has authored several important books. Two of them explore the history of romance and comics in Medan. Koko has also written biographies of two remarkable yet forgotten writers, namely Taguan Hardjo and Zam Nuldyn. Additionally, he has penned a historical novel about Suriname.

In a simple house in a narrow alley in Deli Tua District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, Friday (2/28/2025), Koko was busy arranging a collection of novels and comics on a bookshelf in his living room. The pocket-sized books were already brown. Everything was neatly wrapped in clear plastic.
