A yearlong cultural festival will celebrate the birth centenary and legacy of the award-winning author, beginning with a two-day inaugural event on Feb. 6 in his Central Java hometown.

The Central Java city of Blora, the hometown of renowned author Pramoedya Ananta Toer, is getting ready to launch the "Festival Perayaan Seabad Pramoedya Ananta Toer", a yearlong series of events to mark the late writer’s 100th birthday and enduring legacy. Organized by the Pramoedya Ananta Toer Foundation in collaboration with the Beranda Rakyat Garuda arts community, the inaugural event in Blora opens on Feb. 6, his birthdate, and runs until Feb. 8.
The two-day event is hosting a variety of events, including an arts exhibition, a street naming ceremony, a memorial lecture, film screenings and the “Anak Semua Bangsa” (Child of All Nations) concert in a grand finale, featuring musicians from across the archipelago.
The concert is named after the second book in the highly acclaimed Buru Quartet, which explores the social hierarchy in a colonized nation and is widely regarded as the award-winning author’s magnum opus.
“We invite everyone, those who have read and been inspired by Pramoedya as well as those who may not yet be familiar with his work, to join us in this celebration,” his daughter Astuti Ananta Toer told a press conference on Tuesday at the Taman Ismail Marzuki arts complex in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
“We hope Pramoedya’s legacy will be celebrated by both the Indonesian people and his international supporters,” she added.
