Ida Fitri builds her fictional world based on the rich backdrop of Aceh—its history, myths, and the lives of its people both past and present. The imaginary blends with the factual, the historical with the imaginative, the profane with the religious, revealing various aspects of life experienced by her characters— aspects filled with the legacy of military violence, hypocrisy, as well as wonder and resilience after the tsunami.

“I was born in the hinterlands of Aceh. Deaths without reason in my hometown are one of the reasons for becoming a wanderer, although it’s not easy to be a good wanderer. To survive, I have to master the art of transformation, becoming anything that is around me; for example: when in a city inhabited by wealthy people, I have to live like a wealthy person, or at least pretend to be wealthy by dressing like them.”
